Cricket Bat Buying Guide

How to Choose a Cricket Bat

The right cricket bat depends on the player's size, strength, experience and preferred feel. This guide gives you a practical starting point before choosing a bat.

1. Get the Size Right

Junior bats normally progress through sizes 0–6, followed by Harrow and adult Short Handle bats. Player height is generally more useful than age alone when selecting a size. See our Size Guides for a starting point.

2. Consider Bat Weight

A heavier bat is not automatically better. The player should be able to lift, control and swing the bat comfortably while maintaining technique. Junior players in particular benefit from a manageable pickup.

3. Understand Willow & Grade

English willow bats are commonly chosen for higher-level hard-ball cricket, while Kashmir willow can provide a more accessible option for developing players and recreational use. Within each type, grade affects appearance, performance characteristics and price.

4. Match the Bat to the Player

Consider how often the player competes, whether they play hard-ball cricket, their level of experience and budget. A developing junior does not necessarily need the most expensive bat in the range.
