SPLAY SIZE GUIDES · HOCKEY
Find a comfortable stick length and protective fit.
Use player measurements, playing posture and the exact model’s size information when choosing hockey sticks, shin pads and gloves. A single age-based chart cannot cover every player or design.
Choosing a hockey stick length
Stick length should suit the player’s height, posture and playing preference. Check the actual length offered on the product.
Junior players
Use the player’s height and the model’s size guidance as a starting point. The player should be able to stand and move in a comfortable playing position without a stick that feels unwieldy. Avoid choosing a much longer stick simply for growth.
Ask the coach to check the proposed length if the player is new to hockey.
Adult players
Compare length, weight and balance alongside playing preference. A longer stick changes reach and feel, but is not automatically a better fit. If you already have a comfortable stick, use its measured length as a comparison.
| Product detail | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Stick length | Check the actual inches or centimetres listed; do not assume all adult sticks have one length. |
| Stick weight / balance | Compare the listed specification and your preferred feel, as well as length. |
| Junior / adult label | Treat this as a range label; confirm the exact size offered. |
| Model-specific chart | Use the chart for that exact model rather than transferring another maker’s measurements. |
Hockey shin pad sizing
The pad should cover the shin securely without interfering with knee or ankle movement.
Measure as the model instructs
Some charts use player height; others give pad dimensions or a leg measurement. Follow the chart for the product you are ordering. Extra Small, Small, Medium and Large are not universal measurements.
If no useful dimensions are supplied, ask Splay before ordering.
Check the fit with kit
Check the pad with the socks and footwear normally worn. It should stay in position while bending, running and changing direction. Avoid a pad that presses into the knee or ankle or moves around during play.
Gloves & other protective equipment
Check the exact model’s sizing, coverage and intended use.
Hockey gloves
Measure the hand as the glove chart instructs and choose a secure fit that still allows a comfortable grip on the stick. Check left-hand or right-hand options where offered; a label such as “Small” alone does not specify the correct hand.
Other protection
Follow your school, club or competition’s equipment requirements. Check fit and compatibility with the rest of the kit, and use the supplied fitting instructions. Specialist goalkeeper equipment needs its own product-specific guidance.
A quick fit checklist
- Record the player’s current height and any measurements the product requires.
- Check the exact stick length, pad size and glove hand selected.
- Compare against comfortable existing kit where possible.
- Ask for measurements if the listing does not give enough information.
